Chinese New Year 2024

Chinese New Year is the most prevalent and the oldest festival of the Chinese Culture.  This year, the New Year falls on the 10th of February as per the Lunar Calendar and the celebration will end on 24th February. The festival starts with the beginning of the second new moon or spring season. It continues for 15 days and ends on the night of the full moon. People often refer to it as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year. Other than China, the festival is celebrated Widely among Asian Countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand etc.

On the celebration of the Lunar New Year, families reunite to pay tribute to their ancestors, clean and decorate their homes with red to prevent any bad luck, enjoy traditional Chinese Food, visit festivals, watch Dragon and Lion dances, and exchange gifts in the red Envelops or Hongbao as a gesture of goodwill and blessings. This is the only festival which witnesses the largest annual human migration in China.

What do they do on New Year’s Eve?

It is believed that what you do these days is very important because it will affect the coming years. On this day, People visit the tomb of their ancestors, worship them, wear new clothes, hang spring couplets on the doors and windows, and enjoy the greatest family dinner together. People avoid remaining sad these days, scolding children and saying unlucky words such as death, illness, loss, or pain etc. throughout the festival, people wear lucky colors and eat lucky dishes. They try to clear all dues before the arrival of the festival to start afresh in the year ahead. 

The Year of Wood Dragon

According to the Chinese Zodiac Sign, 2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon. Every year the zodiac animal is changed to represent the coming year. Dragon is a symbol of strength, courage, intelligence, and good luck. The Year of the Dragon last arrived in 2012.
