Can you share a bit about your journey into the hospitality industry and what inspired you to become a hospitality consultant?

Absolutely! My journey into the hospitality industry started over three decades ago. I began as a trainee and in junior positions and worked my way up through sheer dedication and a relentless pursuit of excellence. My career has taken me across over 20 diverse destinations around the globe, working with prestigious hospitality groups like InterContinental Hotels Group, Hilton Hotels, One&Only, Grace Hotels Group and Sun International. The extensive experience I gained in operations, and as I progressively grew in more senior positions, development, asset management, and change leadership naturally led me to become a hospitality consultant. I wanted to leverage this rich background to help other hospitality businesses, particularly those privately and/or family-owned, optimize their performance, enhance service standards, and achieve sustainable growth.

What are the key responsibilities of a hospitality consultant in the realm of asset management, business development, and operations?

As a hospitality consultant specializing in asset management, business development, and operations, my key responsibilities include crafting strategic plans for short-, medium–, and long-term goals, all backed by measurable key performance indicators (KPIs). It’s about optimizing revenue generation, rationalizing costs, and enhancing operational efficiency and service quality. Developing and reinforcing an organizational culture, vision, mission, and core values is also crucial. Identifying, selecting, mentoring, and developing talent at all levels is another significant aspect. I conduct operational and service excellence audits to identify areas for improvement and facilitate transformative business improvement programs.

How do you approach business development for hotels and resorts? What strategies have proven most effective?

When it comes to business development for hotels and resorts, I take a multi-faceted approach. Conducting thorough market research and feasibility studies to identify opportunities is essential. Developing strategic partnerships and alliances to expand market reach and implementing robust sales and marketing strategies, including leveraging digital marketing and social media, have proven very effective. Enhancing the guest experience through continuous improvement in service delivery and facilities, streamlining operations to improve efficiency and reduce costs, and engaging in rebranding and repositioning projects to refresh and elevate the property’s market presence are all strategies that drive growth, increase occupancy rates, and enhance revenue streams.

How do you balance the needs of guests with the financial goals of the property?

Balancing the needs of guests with the financial goals of the property requires a strategic approach. Prioritizing guest satisfaction through exceptional service and personalized experiences is key. At the same time, implementing efficient operational processes to reduce costs without compromising quality is necessary. Utilizing data analytics to understand guest preferences and tailor services accordingly, continuously training and developing staff to maintain high service standards, and introducing innovative solutions and technologies to enhance operational efficiency and guest experience are all part of this balanced approach. This ensures both guest satisfaction and financial sustainability.

Can you share a success story where your intervention significantly improved a hotel’s performance?

Sure! One notable success story is from my tenure as CEO of an African regional hospitality brand. I led the expansion of hotels in Lusaka and Lilongwe, doubling their size and adding new facilities. We introduced new operating policies, enhanced service standards, and optimized financial performance. Additionally, I was engaged from inception to post-opening stages of a new hotel in Kampala, Uganda, which opened in October 2019. The new hotel saw successful operations right from the start, thanks to comprehensive recruitment, training, and strategic planning. As a result, we significantly increased guest satisfaction, improved financial metrics, and strengthened the brand’s competitive position in the market.

What are the most common challenges you face in asset management, and how do you overcome them?

Common challenges in asset management include aligning the interests of various stakeholders, managing operational inefficiencies and high costs, navigating market volatility and economic fluctuations, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. I overcome these challenges by fostering clear communication, implementing robust operational strategies, conducting regular performance audits, and staying adaptable to market changes. Continuous improvement and proactive problem-solving are key to overcoming these hurdles.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in the hospitality industry?

Staying updated with the latest trends and innovations involves regularly attending industry conferences and seminars, participating in professional networks and forums, and engaging with thought leaders and experts in the field. I keep abreast of industry publications and reports, continuously learn through online courses and workshops, and maintain a proactive approach to ensure that I am well-informed about emerging trends and innovations. This allows me to integrate them into my consulting practices effectively.

What role does technology play in your work, and how do you leverage it to enhance operations?

Technology plays a crucial role in enhancing operations in the hospitality industry. I leverage technology by implementing property management systems (PMS) for efficient operations, utilizing customer relationship management (CRM) tools to enhance guest engagement, and adopting data analytics for informed decision-making. Introducing mobile solutions for seamless guest interactions and utilizing IoT devices for energy management and operational efficiency are also key. Also, as a representative of Screenage in Africa, I promote their guest hospitality technologies, which include interactive TV and Guest Wi-Fi solutions that enhance guest engagement, streamline communication, and drive operational efficiency. These AI-powered technological advancements help streamline operations, improve guest digital experiences, and drive operational excellence.

What are some sustainable practices you advocate for in the hospitality industry?

Sustainable practices I advocate for include implementing energy-efficient systems and renewable energy sources, reducing waste through recycling and composting programs, promoting water conservation measures, and sourcing locally and sustainably for food and other resources. Engaging in community development and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives is also important. These practices not only benefit the environment but also enhance the property’s reputation and appeal to environmentally conscious guests.

How do you measure the success of a hospitality project or property under your management?

Success is measured through various key performance indicators (KPIs) such as financial performance metrics like revenue, GOP, and EBITDA, guest satisfaction scores and online reviews, occupancy rates and average daily rates (ADR), and employee satisfaction and retention rates. Additionally, I use the balanced scorecard approach, which provides a comprehensive view by combining financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth perspectives. Regular monitoring and analysis of these KPIs and balanced scorecard metrics provide insights into the property’s performance and areas for improvement.

What value does a hospitality consultant bring to privately/family-owned hospitality and leisure assets and organizations?

A hospitality consultant like myself brings significant value to privately and family-owned hospitality and leisure assets by identifying untapped opportunities and transforming them into tangible gains. My role as a consulting interim or permanent Asset Director empowers me to optimize these assets through revenue enhancement, operational efficiency, and elevated service standards. I craft short-, medium–, and long-term strategic plans backed by measurable key performance indicators, leading to substantial increases in the overall intrinsic value of assets. Additionally, I develop organizational culture, vision, mission, and core values, and provide personal mentorship for family members poised to take over the business, even if they have no direct plans for a hospitality career. My expertise spans revenue generation, cost rationalization, effective utilization of real estate space, and fostering a cohesive organizational culture.

From an owner’s perspective, hiring a consultant like me is both cost-effective and invaluable. I ensure rapid operational integration and immediate impact, unlike new permanent hires who often require longer settling-in periods. This comprehensive approach ensures that privately/family-owned assets achieve sustainable growth and enhanced performance.

Conclusion:

A hospitality consultant plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance and value of hotels and resorts through a variety of strategic approaches. From leveraging technology and sustainable practices to balancing guest needs with financial goals, consultants bring a wealth of expertise to drive growth and operational excellence.
