The Italian Open is a professional, prestigious and famous tennis tournament that is held once a year in Rome, Italy. This international tennis tournament is held generally during the second week of May. It is played on clay Courts and called by different names such as Italian International Championships, Rome Masters and Internazionali BNL d” Italica. History of the Italian Open

The game was first started by court Alberto Bonacossa and first played in the year 1930 in Tennis Club of Milan. The winner of the first edition was American Bill Tilden. The Women,s Tennis Association 1000 and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 are the category of Tennis Tournament. Rafael Nadal is a great inspiration for all Tennis Players out there because of his outstanding performance. The best thing about the tournament is that it has Single events, double events, senior events, junior events as well as events for players who are on wheelchairs. In the whole of history, the tournament was canceled twice, i.e., during World War 2 and Covid 19 Pandemic due to an emergency. 

Date and Venue of Italian Open 2023

The 80th edition of the Italian International Championship was played recently from 9 to 21 May 2023 in the Foro Italico in Rome. It is being played in the Foro Italico since 1935. Foro Italico is one of the oldest tennis courts that was built in the 1920s and almost 10,000 people can watch the Tournament from there easily. 

Prize Money of Italian Open 2023

The Prize money for the men’s Champion was 7,705,780 and for the women’s Champion was 3,572,618 in 2023. The match continued for 2 weeks for the first time in history because of the draw between men and women of up to 96 players.

The winner of the men’s and women’s single Tournament for the year 2023 was Daniil Medvedev and Elena Rybakina respectively whereas the winner of the men’s and women’s double tournament are Hugo Nys/Jan Zielinski and Storm Hunter/ Elise Mertens respectively.

  • Novak Djokovic won the Male’s Single Tournament Championship in 2020 and 2022, Rafael Nadal was the champion of the year 2019 and 2021 and  Alexander Zverev got the title in 2018.
  • Iga Swiatek was Women’s Single tournament Champion of the year 2022 and 2021, Simona Halep got the title in 2020 and Elina Svitolina in 2018.

  • The winner of the 2022 and 2021 Male Double tournament was Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.
  • In 2020, the title was earned by Marcel Granollers and Horacio and Zeballos. 
  • The Women Champion of 2022 was Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia and that of 2021 was Sharon Fichman and Giuliana Olmos. 

Interesting Facts about Men’s and Women’s Single Tournament in Italian Open 

  • Rafael Nadal won almost 69 matches and played a total of 77 matches in the Italian Open. 
  • Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were the two players in the history of Male’s Single Tournament who reached 12 times in the Final. 
  • The Holder of the Most consecutive title and finalist was also Rafael Nadal. 
  • The youngest Championship was given in 1975 to the 17 years old Bjorn Borg. 
  • Serena William and Conchita Martinez played and won the most match in the women’s Single Tournament. 
  • Chris Evert was the only woman in the history of women’s Single Tournament who got into the final list 7 times and won the championship 5 times.
